Hashiya: Scholarship on the Edge
Welcome to Hashiya, a new intellectual journal by the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, takes its name from the Arabic term for marginalia, wherein notes and commentaries were written along the edges of seminal texts. Historically, the ḥawāshī (plural of ḥāshiya) were an important genre of scholarship that facilitated the preservation, transmission, and advancement of knowledge. Often beautifully embellished, they elucidated the unclear, elaborated the implicit, and contributed new arguments and perspectives to Muslim conversations across time and space.
